For the first time in my life, I not only got to pick out my tree, but we were actually able to cut it down ourselves. Ok, so my husband cut it down all by himself, but we were cheering him on all the way!
Although it was entirely too cold for Texas, it was still a lot of fun, and felt more like I was back home in Virginia. Especially with all the hills and trees. It didn't feel like the typical Texas landscape at all!
They have all kinds of different trees at this farm, but most of them were Leyland Ceder, which is what we took home with us. Luckily, it didn't take us too long to find the perfect tree, and get right to chopping.
The perfect tree!
Working hard!
Watching daddy chop the tree down.
Success!
Well, it was quite an adventure, and one that I hope will become a family tradition. My husband has already decided what type of tree he wants next year, and next time we will be able to include our son, which will make it even more special.
We did learn a few lessons this first go round, however, that should make next year's hunt just a little bit easier:
1. Wear layers. Many layers.
2. Get a steamy cup of hot chocolate before climbing all the way up the side of a small mountain.
3. Listen to the instructions before proceeding to cut down your perfect tree.
4. Wear comfortable shoes.
5. Bring sturdy gloves for chopping and lugging a rather large tree.
6. Know what size tree you are looking for before you are standing in the middle of a large tree farm. (Trees look deceptively small in the middle of a wide open field, as compared to your living room).
7. Arrive earlier in the day, so there is plenty of time to enjoy the experience, and get the tree loaded up. It will undoubtedly take longer than planned.
Any other tree chopping tips would be greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas!
