On Friday, we decided we needed to get out of the house, so we ventured off to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. I always love when I can learn a little more about New Mexico and life in the desert, because it is so different from Virginia.
It was not exactly the Fort Worth Zoo, but in all fairness, there is not much that can compare with that. It was, however, very educational about wildlife in the Chihuahuan Desert. We saw a variety of birds, as well as pigs, wolves, and a mountain lion (who apparently has arthritis...it was very sad). But mostly, we saw the many MANY forms of plant life that exist in the desert, and some
truly incredible views, that none of my pictures could possibly do justice.
There are all kinds of crazy plants here that I have never seen or heard of before, including several different cacti. I could not tell you what they are right now, but maybe eventually I will start to learn them all!

Just a few of the wild plants I see around here. |

One giant cactus! |
It was CRAZY hot, and not like any zoo I have ever been to, but you definitely feel like you are actually
walking through the desert when you're there. And the kids seemed to enjoy it, even in the heat! (And if you want to know the truth, they did better than I did!)

Reminding us not to touch the prickly plants! |
|
Content to hang out in the wagon. |
|
Quick water break!! |
I'm sure we will be back (hopefully, when it is not quite as hot) many times as the kids get older. I would love to have time to explore all the things we didn't get to see!! :)
