Downright Handsome

Today, I felt like I saw my baby boy for the very first time.  We had a wonderful afternoon.  I held him, and he was doing well (up to 3 lb. 10 oz!).  Then, as I was getting ready to leave, the nurse let me know that she was going to take off his CPAP and get him cleaned up a bit before putting it back on (his face is covered in tape, and the CPAP makes a lot of bubbles, so it can get pretty messy sometimes).  Well, I didn't think too much of this, because I assumed she was just changing the tape, or pulling the tubes out of his nose or something.  But she asked if I wanted to get some quick pictures while it was off, so of course I ran to get the camera!  When I turned back around, the entire machine was completely off, out of his poor little nose, and his cap was off his head.  I felt like I got a real look at what my son looks like for the very first time.  Keep in mind what I normally see when I visit or hold him:

Somehow, he still manages to look absolutely precious, even with the CPAP squishing his nostrils up to his eyeballs.  But without the CPAP, I have to say, he is downright handsome (even though his sweet little nostrils are still somewhat squished).

Today, I got a really good look at his amazing face.  His incredibly tiny ears.  The shape of his head.  His button nose.  His head full of hair.

He is already 22 days old, and yet I feel like I really saw him for the very first time.  It was so unbelievably wonderful (albeit entirely too brief).  But one day soon, he won't need all that extra support anymore, and I can smile at that sweet face every single day.  And then, he won't even need to be in the hospital anymore, and our entire family can enjoy this handsome, handsome boy every single day.

Oh, how I am longing for that day.
